Medical Exercise Specialist Podcast - 3 MES Frameworks
In this episode of the Medical Exercise Specialist Podcast, Michael Jones, president of the Medical Exercise Training Institute, introduces the core of the MedEx Pro operating system. He explains the critical shift fitness professionals must make to transition from being simply an "exercise technician" into a true "professional practice owner".
A major theme of this episode is that exercise skills alone cannot build a sustainable practice. Michael explains that relying on skill without a structured system leads to inconsistent service, personality dependency, unstable revenue, and a lack of referrals from medical professionals.
To build a professional, consistent, and highly referred practice, Michael breaks down the three foundational frameworks of the MedEx Pro operating system:
• 1. The Enterprise Framework (The Strategic Layer): This framework dictates high-level business decisions, financial planning, risk management, and pricing. Michael uses a great story about a five-star restaurant experience in Greece to illustrate how your enterprise decisions—like positioning yourself at the top of the market—dictate the premium level of service and professionalism you must deliver. This layer sets the ultimate standard for your practice.
• 2. The Practice Management Framework (The Operational Layer): This covers the daily operations and administration of your practice that aren't directly linked to client exercise. It includes facility maintenance, marketing, staff education, and critical documentation systems. A key focus here is making your practice "referral ready" and "reimbursement ready" by standardizing intake processes and ensuring medical providers receive consistent one-page assessment summaries and 30-day progress reports.
• 3. The Client Management Framework (The Delivery Layer): This is where your exercise expertise directly interfaces with the client. It involves using mandatory, consistent assessment guidelines and functional assessment scales based on the client's specific condition and affected body region. This ensures that every client receives a standardized evaluation, allowing you to set clear goals and seamlessly communicate findings back to their physician.
Looking ahead, Michael notes that the demand for medical exercise will grow exponentially due to the aging baby boomer population and rising rates of chronic disease. However, capturing this opportunity requires more than just knowing how to train; it requires installing reliable systems and systematic processes into your business.
