Choose your path

Four ways to complete your 10 qualifying hours.

METI recognizes several approaches to continuing professional development. Choose a qualifying pathway that reflects your interests and work setting, then document the hours using the corresponding evidence.

01

METI continuing education

Complete ten hours of eligible METI online courses, on-site workshops, or medical exercise-related continuing education. Deepen the knowledge you use with clients and medical referral sources.

Documentation: Course completion certificates showing training and hours.
02

Qualifying professional workshops

Complete ten hours of medical exercise or post-rehabilitation education taught by an appropriately credentialed healthcare professional, such as a physician, PT, OT, chiropractor, nurse, or athletic trainer.

Documentation: Certificates with course title, instructor, dates, and contact hours.
03

Supervised clinical observation

Complete ten hours in an appropriate rehabilitation, sports medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic, athletic training, or related setting under qualified professional supervision. This is observation or authorized support—not independent healthcare treatment.

Documentation: Signed observation-hours log verified by the supervising practitioner.
04

Humanitarian community service NEW OPTION

Complete ten hours of volunteer service through a church, nonprofit, shelter, or organization serving people in need. Service may be unrelated to exercise or wellness. This is an opportunity to give back and strengthen your role in your community.

Documentation: Official organizational letterhead stating dates, service activities and total hours, signed by the director or supervising representative.
Combining activities: METI's published policy permits a combination of qualifying professional education and clinical observation totaling ten hours. The new humanitarian pathway is presented here as a complete ten-hour alternative. Contact METI before combining humanitarian service with other categories.

Questions answered

Certification Renewal FAQs

Which METI certifications follow this renewal policy?

Medical Exercise Specialist (MES), Post Rehab Conditioning Specialist (PRCS), Medical Exercise Program Director (MEPD), and Advanced Medical Exercise Specialist (AMES).

How often must I renew?

Every two years. Complete the qualifying hours, ethics requirement, documentation, and applicable fee for the renewal cycle.

Can I renew by volunteering outside the medical exercise field?

Yes. The humanitarian service option allows ten hours of volunteer work with a church, nonprofit, shelter, or community organization serving people in need. Food distribution, outreach support, and other supervised charitable services may qualify; the work does not have to involve exercise or wellness.

What does the humanitarian verification letter need to include?

It must be on the organization's official letterhead, name the volunteer, confirm service dates and activities, document at least ten hours, and be signed by the director or supervisor who verified those hours.

Can I combine continuing education with clinical observation?

Yes. METI's published renewal policy recognizes a combination of relevant coursework and supervised clinical observation totaling ten hours. Contact METI before mixing humanitarian service with those hours, because that combination is not specifically addressed in the attached guidance.

Does humanitarian service replace ethics training?

No. The Medical Exercise Professional Ethics course and competency quiz remain mandatory, regardless of which ten-hour pathway you select.

How much does renewal cost?

The current standard renewal checkout lists $50. For certificates expired more than one year, the existing website also references a separate reinstatement fee. Contact METI before paying if your certificate has been expired for an extended period.

What if I was originally certified before 2012?

If this is your first renewal and you have not completed the Medical Exercise Foundations content, an additional Foundations requirement may apply. Contact METI with your original certificate before proceeding; earlier materials describe different access arrangements.

What if I have more than one METI certification?

The policy covers MES, PRCS, MEPD, and AMES. Contact the METI office to confirm how your individual certification records and renewal payment should be processed.

May I provide medical care under my renewed certification?

No. METI certification documents professional exercise education. It does not license the practice of medicine, physical therapy, chiropractic, or other regulated clinical treatment. MedExPROs remain within an exercise-only scope and coordinate appropriately with licensed healthcare professionals.
