In 1994, Jeffrey Wright, ATC, DPT, and I taught the very first Medical Exercise Specialist Workshop and Certification in Washington, DC. At the time, medical exercise training wasn't a recognized profession. It was an idea that there was a real gap between the end of healthcare and the beginning of a client's independent life, and that someone needed to be trained specifically to work in that space, safely and professionally.
