Medical Exercise Training Institute — Bridging the Gap Between Healthcare and Fitness

About METI • Founded July 1994

We saw the gap.
We built the bridge.

The Medical Exercise Training Institute (METI) began with a problem we witnessed in our physical therapy clinics. When rehabilitation ended, many people still needed knowledgeable, structured exercise to restore and sustain everyday function. In July 1994, our first Medical Exercise Specialist workshop introduced a new professional pathway: bridging the gap between healthcare and fitness.

Our story

It started in the physical therapy clinic.

In the early 1990s, we saw people complete rehabilitation who no longer required skilled medical treatment but still needed to improve strength, movement tolerance, endurance, and confidence for daily life.

We believed there had to be a qualified exercise professional who could continue this exercise component of functional conditioning without claiming to diagnose or deliver medical treatment.

That conviction led to our first Medical Exercise Specialist (MES) workshop in Washington, DC, in July 1994. The phrase “Bridging the Gap Between Healthcare and Fitness” captured the purpose—and it remains our purpose today.

More than a certification

Learning a new mindset. Building a real profession.

METI teaches more than exercises for specific conditions. Our education connects professional boundaries, client-management competence, documentation, medical communication, and the business systems required for responsible practice.

01

Clear Professional Scope

Deliver exercise—not diagnosis, physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, or other licensed medical services. Understand precautions and when medical referral is appropriate.

02

Functional Outcomes

Assess relevant abilities, plan and progress exercise, monitor response, and document meaningful changes in function.

03

Medical Referral Relationships

Build trust with physicians, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other referral sources through clear services and professional updates.

04

Practice Infrastructure

Learn the documentation, communications, operations, scheduling, and referral systems that support a sustainable MedExPRO practice.

Medical Exercise Training is structured exercise for clients with medical conditions, delivered within the exercise professional’s qualifications and scope. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment.

Founder, Medical Exercise Training Institute • Co-developer of the Medical Exercise Specialist

Dr. Jones is a physical therapist, educator, and former rehabilitation practice owner with more than four decades of experience in physical therapy, orthopedics, sports medicine, rehabilitation management, and professional education. He has led clinical teams, owned physical therapy clinics, and taught healthcare and exercise professionals.

His experience revealed a persistent gap: when medical treatment ended, clients often still needed guided exercise to regain or maintain functional capacity. That insight shaped the original 1994 MES workshop and continues to guide METI’s approach to professional competence and ethical practice development.

Today, he encourages every Medical Exercise Professional (MedExPRO) to understand professional boundaries, communicate effectively with referral sources, and demonstrate measurable functional outcomes.

“Certification is the beginning. Referral readiness is the destination.”
